Cucurrucucu Paloma – Caetano Veloso
Maybe one of the most beautiful musical performances in cinema, I recall when seeing this in the theater it simply held me, as if freezing time, I just sat there marveling in the tenderness of Caetano Veloso’s voice singing over this poignant trio… utterly breathtaking. Though not written for Habla con Ella (Talk to Her), this version of the song was arranged especially for the film. Caetano Veloso was just here last night at the Paramount in Oakland with Gilberto Gil, it must have been a wonderful concert. So please, sit back and feel the sweet depths of this endearing rendition.

I love that you’re featuring this song. It’s as beautiful as a song gets to be. Just this weekend, Teresa was telling me that this song reminded her of her road trip across the country with Ozan as they played a cd I made for them. And on Monday, the crown goddess Irama and I were thunderstruck as we walked by the jazz center in Hayes Valley and saw that Caetano Veloso would be performing the next day. Alas, the crown goddess would be flying back to Chicago. I didn’t know this song was in the Pedro Almodovar movie, a movie I missed but now will want to see all the more. Here’s a youtube link to several giants in music performing Volver a los 17 together, in a much younger day, the grand Mercedes Sosa, with Caetano Veloso in the all white suit, Chico Buarque, Milton Nascimento, and Gal Costa — https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bm3lZG1MTJs
